Materials You'll Need
- Plywood (4' x 8' sheet you can choose the thickness based on desired sturdiness; 3/4" is recommended)
- Wood glue
- Screws (1 1/4" and 2" wood screws)
- Wood filler
- Sandpaper (various grits, from 80 to 220)
- Paint or stain (child-safe, non-toxic)
- Drawer slides (appropriate length for your drawer size)
- Drawer pull or knob
- Safety Glasses
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Circular saw or table saw
- Drill/Driver
- Clamps
- Square
Step 1: Cutting the Pieces Carefully measure and cut the plywood according to the following dimensions. These are suggestions; you can adjust them to fit your space and desired table size:
- Tabletop: 36" x 24"
- Table Legs (4): 20" high, 3" wide
- Drawer Front: 22" x 6"
- Drawer Sides (2): 18" x 6"
- Drawer Back: 21" x 6"
- Drawer Bottom: 21" x 17"
- Apron (2 long sides): 36" x 4"
- Apron (2 short sides): 24" x 4"
Step 2: Assembling the Table Frame (Apron) Apply wood glue to the edges of the apron pieces and clamp them together to form a rectangular frame. Ensure the corners are square using a square tool. Predrill holes and then screw the pieces together using 1 1/4" wood screws. Let the glue dry completely.
Step 3: Attaching the Legs Apply wood glue to the top inside corners of the apron frame where the legs will attach. Position the legs inside the corners, ensuring they are flush with the top edge of the apron. Clamp the legs in place. Predrill holes through the apron into the legs and secure with 2" wood screws. Let the glue dry completely.
Step 4: Attaching the Tabletop Center the tabletop on top of the assembled frame (apron and legs). Predrill holes through the apron into the underside of the tabletop. Secure the tabletop to the frame using 1 1/4" wood screws.
Step 5: Building the Drawer Apply wood glue to the edges of the drawer sides, front, and back. Assemble the drawer box, clamping the pieces together and ensuring they are square. Predrill holes and screw the pieces together using 1 1/4" wood screws. Slide the drawer bottom into the assembled drawer box and secure it with glue and screws.
Step 6: Installing Drawer Slides Follow the instructions included with your drawer slides to install them on the inside of the apron frame and on the sides of the drawer. Ensure the slides are aligned properly for smooth drawer operation.
Step 7: Finishing and Painting Fill any screw holes or imperfections with wood filler. Let the filler dry completely and then sand the entire table and drawer smooth using progressively finer grits of sandpaper (80, 120, 180, 220). Wipe away any sanding dust. Apply your chosen paint or stain to the table and drawer, following the manufacturer's instructions. Allow the finish to dry completely.
Step 8: Adding the Drawer Pull Drill a hole in the center of the drawer front and attach the drawer pull or knob.
Final Step: Enjoy Your New Play Table! Slide the drawer into the table and test its operation. Your DIY kids play table with a drawer is now complete! Fill it with toys, art supplies, or anything your child enjoys.
Conclusion: A Functional and Fun Addition You've now created a custom play table that is both functional and fun. This project not only provides a dedicated space for your child's activities but also adds a touch of handmade charm to your home. Enjoy the hours of playtime and the added storage this table provides!
