Introduction: The Humble Shoe Bench, Elevated Tired of tripping over shoes as soon as you walk in the door? A DIY entryway shoe bench is the perfect solution! It provides a convenient place to sit while taking shoes on or off, and offers organized storage to keep your entryway clutter-free. This step-by-step guide will walk you through creating a sturdy and stylish shoe bench that you can customize to fit your specific needs and aesthetic.
Materials and Tools: Gathering Your Arsenal Before you begin, gather the following materials and tools:
  • Wood: Consider using lumber such as pine, poplar, or even reclaimed wood. The amount of wood needed will depend on the size of your desired bench. Common dimensions are: top (12" 18" deep, 36" 48" wide), legs (4), supports (as needed). Adjust these measurements to suit your entry space.
  • Screws: Choose wood screws of appropriate length for connecting the wood pieces (1 1/4" 2" should work well).
  • Wood Glue: For stronger joints.
  • Sandpaper: Various grits (80, 120, 220) for smoothing the wood.
  • Wood Stain or Paint: To finish and protect the wood.
  • Polyurethane or Varnish: For a protective topcoat (optional).
  • Measuring Tape: For accurate measurements.
  • Pencil: For marking measurements.
  • Saw: A circular saw, miter saw, or hand saw for cutting the wood.
  • Drill: With drill bits for pilot holes and driving screws.
  • Sander: (Optional) To speed up the sanding process.
  • Clamps: To hold pieces together while the glue dries.
  • Safety Glasses and Dust Mask: For protection while working.
  • Step 1: Planning and Cutting the Wood Begin by sketching out your desired shoe bench design, noting the dimensions of each piece. Based on your plan, carefully measure and cut the wood according to the following list, adjusting as needed:
  • Bench Top: Cut one piece to your desired length and width.
  • Legs: Cut four legs to your desired height (typically 16" 20").
  • Side Supports: Cut two pieces to connect the legs on the sides (length determined by the distance between the legs).
  • Front and Back Supports: Cut two pieces to connect the legs on the front and back (length determined by the distance between the legs).
  • Optional Shelf Supports: If adding a shelf, cut additional pieces for supporting the shelf (the number and size will depend on the shelf design).
  • Double-check all measurements before cutting to minimize errors.
Step 2: Assembling the Frame Attach the side, front, and back supports to the legs using wood glue and screws.
  • Apply wood glue to the joining surfaces.
  • Clamp the pieces together to ensure a tight bond.
  • Drill pilot holes to prevent the wood from splitting.
  • Drive screws through the supports into the legs.
  • Ensure the frame is square and level before the glue dries. Let the glue dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Step 3: Attaching the Bench Top Once the frame is dry, attach the bench top using wood glue and screws.
  • Center the frame on the underside of the bench top.
  • Apply wood glue to the top of the frame.
  • Clamp the top to the frame.
  • Drill pilot holes through the frame and into the bench top.
  • Drive screws to secure the top to the frame.
  • Allow the glue to dry completely.
Step 4: Adding a Shelf (Optional) If you want to add a shelf for additional shoe storage:
  • Cut a piece of wood to the desired size for the shelf.
  • Attach the shelf supports to the inside of the frame at the desired height using wood glue and screws.
  • Place the shelf on top of the supports.
  • Secure the shelf to the supports with wood glue and screws.
  • Step 5: Sanding and Finishing Once the bench is fully assembled, it's time to sand and finish the wood.
  • Start with 80-grit sandpaper to remove any rough edges or imperfections.
  • Progress to 120-grit sandpaper to smooth the surface.
  • Finish with 220-grit sandpaper for a silky smooth finish.
  • Wipe away any sanding dust with a tack cloth.
  • Apply your chosen wood stain or paint according to the manufacturer's instructions. Allow it to dry completely.
  • If desired, apply a coat of polyurethane or varnish for added protection and durability.
  • Step 6: Final Touches and Placement Once the finish is dry, inspect the bench for any imperfections. Add felt pads to the bottom of the legs to protect your floor. Place your new shoe bench in your entryway, arrange your shoes neatly, and enjoy your organized and stylish entryway! You can also add cushions for seating comfort if desired.
